zombies
Zombies or ”Walkers” as referred in the series, are dead people that have reanimated.
The only way to kill a zombie is to cut off its head or destroy it's brain, as after death a small part of their brain is reactivated, (only the brain stem) this gives the zombies their basic instincts and the ability to move and eat etc, but as the main part of their brain is still dead, they are extremely stupid.
After death, it takes between a couple of minutes to a couple of hours to reanimate, however one two seperate occasions it has taken only a few seconds, and eight hours to reanimate, so it depends highly on the person.
Originally it is believed that a bite is required to turn, however this is put into question when people that have never been bitten or even scratched, reanimate after death.
This means that the bite only kills you via a strong infection, and isn't actually the cause of reanimation. Which is evidence that the virus is airborne, and everyone is a carrier.
